Grand Chapter Congress: Make the most of your experience!

June 29, 2011

By: Cory Stopka, Educational and Leadership Consultant

Attending Grand Chapter Congress will be the best decision you make and whether this is your first or 15th, there is plenty to experience in Louisville!

One of the easiest ways to make your GCC experience great is to BRING YOUR FRIENDS! Although you will meet so many brothers while at Congress, having your friends will make it that much more enjoyable (and that 12 hour road trip feel much shorter).

Another key to making your trip a truly memorable experience is to plan ahead! Check out the agenda online to plan which educational sessions—like Building Your Personal Brand, Money Through the Decades and Recruiting 101—and other activities you will attend, so you can plan time to explore Louisville—recently named one of America’s “Best Bang for the Bucks.”

Check out our Louisville Travel Guide ahead of time for discounts and things to do, see and experience. And while you are at Congress, follow what’s happening at GCC on Twitter at #dspgcc and let us know what you are doing! And wear your letters while exploring the city so you can meet up with other Deltasigs. You can also check out a list of attendees to see if any brothers you have met at other events might be attending.

And be sure to plan to attend the Grand President’s Dance Wednesday night—wear your jockey outfit, derby hat, sundress, seersucker suit or anything else that goes with the Kentucky Derby theme. Don’t miss the Golden Knights Ceremony at 10:30. This only happens at GCC and you get a free pin! And Deltasigs love their pins!!!

Our national honorary initiate, USA Harvest Founder Stan Curtis, will be initiated Thursday. Initiation is open only to brothers, but everyone is invited to hear Stan speak afterward. You definitely don’t want to miss it because this initiation should be one of the best you have ever seen or experienced. Every chapter should perform initiation like it will be done for Stan.

During this GCC, some proposals to change our ritual will be considered (this doesn’t happen very often) and the next national leadership team will be elected. You can have a voice in this. Check out the proposed ritual changes (brothers only—password required) and browse the Candidates Beacon online. You should also use Congress as a time to talk to your national leadership about your concerns as a chapter—it is one place they will all be together to hear you!

Take time Friday night to meet new people and PLAY BALL (or at least watch a ball game) at Louisville Slugger Field for a Bats baseball game, live band, dinner and fireworks. (This experience is included in the full registration price.)

Saturday’s formal banquet will be an extravagant event which you will remember for a long time. We will honor the 2009-11 Board of Directors and 2011 Lifetime Achievement Honoree H. Nicholas Windeshausen, Nebraska-Lincoln, who exemplifies the meaning of being a true Deltasig. And you won’t want to miss the Congress countdown to find out who has been to more Congresses than anyone else (can you believe this will be one brother’s 32nd Congress—and they only occur every other year!)

Also, be sure to check out the Deltasig Marketplace. Chapters and vendors will be selling Deltasig merchandise (so bring plenty of cash), partners will be giving away information and other goodies and GIN Systems staff will be there to teach collegiate chapters about their new GIN System.

Meeting new people and expanding your network throughout the week may be the greatest benefit of GCC. Feel comfortable introducing yourself to other brothers, presenters and guests. Talk about the Fraternity, brotherhood or what you learned or experienced. Whatever the topic, be interested and engaged to find what potential you can discover with hundreds of Deltasigs in one city.

We hope you will join us August 10-14 in Louisville! The next registration deadline to save money is July 1. You can still register for GCC online after July 1 or onsite. Rooms at the Marriott Downtown Louisville must be reserved before June 30.

How will you make attending GCC in Louisville your best decision ever?
