January is National Blood Donor Month

January 4, 2012

Did You Know…?

  • Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
  • More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day.
  • You can give the “Gift of Life” by supporting the Red Cross or your local blood bank.

Since 1970 January has been declared National Volunteer Blood Donor Month and with good reason—it’s the month that presents the most challenges in recruiting people to give blood.

Changing weather, busy holiday schedules, increased cold and flu symptoms and even the winter blues can keep the most dedicated blood donors from making or keeping an appointment to give. This is the perfect time for your chapter to get involved with the National Blood Drive, one of Deltasig’s national community service initiatives. On behalf of the National Community Service Committee and other Deltasig leaders…THANK YOU to those chapters who have already participated!

Here’s how your chapter can get involved this year:

  • Sponsor your own blood drive. Go to or for information. Be sure to contact the local blood bank IMMEDIATELY and check availability as it can take up to 3 months or more to schedule an event.
  • Sponsor a drive with another group, such as another chapter, campus organization or your university.
  • Volunteer at a blood drive event. Giving blood is not required.

Let the Fraternity know about your event:

  • Register your event with National Community Service Chair Kris McDaniel. In the email, be sure to include: chapter name; chapter contact and contact e-mail; blood bank name; blood drive date. Also be sure to apply for CMP Credit.

The National Blood Drive runs through April and participation in this national initiative is one way to remain eligible for Delta Sigma Pi’s Community Service Award. Be sure to apply for the National Community Service Award by June 1.
