Policies vs. Bylaws

May 29, 2012

Welcome back to Terminology Tuesday! Each Tuesday we will blog about some commonly misunderstood terms within the Fraternity. It’s our hope that you will take the time to read and then share this information with others.

The National Fraternity and each collegiate and alumni chapter have their own set of bylaws and policies. The Grand Chapter and individual chapter vote on bylaws and the Board of Directors and the Chapter Executive Committee vote on policies.

National Bylaws and National Policies & Procedures are online.  Templates for individual collegiate and alumni chapter bylaws can also be found online as well as sample chapter policies. The bylaws are a template where each chapter fills in their own information. The policy manual sampleis designed to help the chapter format its own policies and procedures—it is not a requirement that chapters follow any of the specific sample policies. The chapter should customize their policies and make necessary changes to fit the needs of the chapter and to follow any university policies.
