American Cancer Society

September 6, 2012

Provincial Initiative for Northeastern Province, North Central Province and Southern Province (The Southern Province is Relay for Life specifically.  The other 2 provinces are American Cancer Society.)

The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 as the American Society for the Control of Cancer in New York City. From the beginning, a century ago, a cancer diagnosis was an absolute death sentence. Fast-forwarding to 1946, a $1 Million research center was created with regular volunteers. One year later, a campaign began to raise awareness and more funds. In 1971, the National Cancer Act was passed, which granted funds & authority to expand the National Cancer Institute.

Today, the American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Headquartered in Atlanta, GA, the ACS has 12 chartered Divisions, more than 900 local offices, and a presence in more than 5,100 communities.

The easiest way for college students to help the American Cancer Society is to participate in Relay For Life. Prior to the event, organize a team and fundraise. When the event arrives, take turns walking, jogging or running to help fund raise for a cure.

No matter why you take part in Relay, however, one thing is clear: with every step you take, you are helping the American Cancer Society save lives. With your help, we aren’t just fighting one type of cancer – we’re fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. Each person who shares the Relay experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to create a world where this disease will no longer threaten the lives of our loved ones or claim another year of anyone’s life.

Other ways to help support the American Cancer Society include participating in walks, helping to educate through the Great American Smokeout, and in general being an advocate for the American Cancer Society.
