Resource Monday: Sample News Release

January 28, 2013

News releases can be one of the best ways to communicate information about your organization to the community, if done well. To improve your chances of having a new release published or used as the basis of a story, the most important thing you can do is ensure the news release is newsworthy. That may sound silly, but editors will truly appreciate a well written release and will toss poorly written ones. For your story to be newsworthy it should include at least one of the following aspects of a good news story: timeliness, proximity to the local community, conflict/controversy, human interest or relevance/information helpful to readers.

You should also be sure to include the most important information at the top because editors often cut from the bottom to fit word limits. Remember that your release should be error-free and be sure to use AP style because editors will appreciate that and be more likely to publish your story.
