What does COY mean?

March 26, 2013

Welcome back to Terminology Tuesday! Each Tuesday we will blog about some commonly misused terms within the Fraternity. It’s our hope that you take some time to read, laugh, smile, and then use the information to alter your word choices, and the choices of those around you.

Each year, a collegiate member from every chapter who demonstrates what it truly means to be a Deltasig, is chosen as their chapter’s collegian of the year (COY).

The following criteria, in order of importance, are taken into consideration in the selection of chapter candidates, the regional and provincial winners, and finally the selection of the National Collegian of the Year: Fraternity involvement; attendance at inter-chapter Fraternity events including but not limited to Grand Chapter Congress, LEAD, Provincial LEAD, regional initiations, chapter activations, etc.; essay outlining goals if selected as National Collegian of the Year, degree of Leadership exhibited in Delta Sigma Pi; university/Community involvement and leadership; scholastic Aptitude/GPA; additional essays required by the application and letters of recommendation.  Other criteria considered includes, in no particular order:  ability to represent the Fraternity on the national Board of Directors, leadership ability, dependability, responsibility, honesty, integrity, sincerity, moral character, personality and professional attitude.

Regional winners are selected by a committee appointed by the Regional Vice President and then each Provincial Scholastic Development and Awards Committee selects a Provincial COY. The National Scholastic Development and Awards Committee recommends the national winner from among them, which is approved by the Board of Directors.

Regional Collegian of the Year winners receive: a pearl and ruby badge and a cash award. Provincial winners receive an additional $500 scholarship for graduate school studies that occur within 5 years and the national winner also serves as a voting member of Delta Sigma Pi’s Board of Directors for a two-year term and becomes eligible for a $5000 scholarship from the Foundation.

Congratulations to 2013 National COY Richard Brandt, Tampa, who will join 2012 COY Cody Candee, Wisconsin-Madison, as member of the Board of Directors in August. Thanks again to 2011 National COY Cody Silva, Loyola-Marymount, for all his hard work!  All chapter, regional and provincial COYs were recognized in the July issue of The DELTASIG.
